Autumn Play Away Day 2025

16 November 2025 | Broughton High School, Edinburgh

What happens when you bring 80 young musicians together for a day of music-making, friendship and plenty of noise?

You get a brilliant SScOT Autumn Play Away Day.

On Sunday 16 November, musicians from across Scotland came together at Broughton High School in Edinburgh for a fantastic day of rehearsals, playing and getting to know fellow young musicians.

And what a group we had.

  • 80 musicians took part
  • 43 string players and 37 wind, brass and percussion players
  • 38 boys and 42 girls
  • 24 musicians were new to SScOT — around 30% of everyone taking part
  • Musicians travelled from 16 of Scotland’s 32 local authorities

That means young musicians from half of Scotland’s local authorities were represented in one room — bringing together different schools, communities, instruments and musical experiences, all with one thing in common: a love of making music.

For our 24 new musicians, it was a chance to discover what SScOT is all about, meet new people and throw themselves into a day of orchestral playing. For returning musicians, it was an opportunity to welcome new faces, catch up with friends and make music together once again.

From strings to woodwind, brass to percussion, the day was filled with the sound of young musicians learning, listening and playing as one ensemble.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, and to the teachers, tutors, volunteers and staff who helped make the Autumn Play Away Day such a success.

We can’t wait to see where all these musicians take their music next.

80 musicians. 16 local authorities. 24 new faces. One fantastic day of music.
